Meet Barbie Chatterjee, who is a fashion influencer, makeup artist, teacher, and dancer. Her journey as a makeup artist started when she was a child, as she was a dancer and had to do makeup for that. That is how her inclination towards makeup started. Although back then her mother used to do her makeup but growing up she started doing it herself and fell in love with it. She started watching and learning from makeup tutorials on Youtube. Back when she started doing makeup in 2016, makeup was not a thing, it was not that popular as it is today.
Barbie’s parents were extremely supportive throughout her journey. They helped her by buying makeup products and other essentials necessary for her profession, initially. But they always suggested having a backup option. As this industry is very unpredictable and you never know if you will have a successful career in it or not. So having a backup is always important.
As a backup option, I always take my studies with me. This year, I just got done with my graduation from NIIS Institute. I like both English and Computer. So, if I would have not taken makeup then I would have opted for content writing or Java as my niche. I love both of those fields of work. Besides that, I also love teaching, I have been giving private tuition for the past 2-3 years on English. During this pandemic, I started my own online dance classes as well.
Barbie takes her inspiration from everywhere. She tries to find creativity from her surrounding. Besides that, she also scrolls through Instagram a lot, so from that, she gets a lot of inspiration from people’s art. Her one single look sometimes is inspired by 100 different types of looks. She loves experimenting every time. For every look, she always tries to be better than last time. She first competes with herself before others.
She has worked with brands like Roopmantra, Mother Sparsh, Myglamm, MyberoMt, Cocosoulbeauty, DermaCo, etc. Her favorite work from all her makeup look was one of the orange-yellow looks which was a body paint look inspired from a landscape picture on Google. After she posted that look, she received a lot of appreciation and compliments.
I think the most important quality that a makeup artist should have is regular practice. Secondly, they also need to plan everything beforehand or else there are chances that one could mess up a look. Next, all makeup artists should have a good sense of time as a particular look takes a lot of time, so you need to be smart in managing time. Lastly, makeup artists need to be very consistent as well as creative every time.
Barbie has faced a lot of criticism during her career. Giving an example she said that once she went to a wedding where she was wearing a blue dress to which she did a blue smokey eye as well. But people at that wedding started criticizing her so much saying that she should not put makeup on as it will destroy her skin. She should rather go for subtle makeup which will suit her more. Like these, a lot of scenarios have happened with her which sometimes demotivate her and make her sad. It is also concerning sometimes that people are so unaware of makeup.

She suggested that people who put on makeup should always blend it well otherwise it won’t look good. Also, it is necessary to buy the right shade of foundation which matches their skin color and texture, or else it would not blend properly which will not give good results.
Content creation requires a lot of patience. I will suggest if anyone wants to step into this industry they need to be very calm throughout. As it will be a long process for you to reach a stage where you will earn out of it. But once you get a lot of followers and likes, brands will automatically approach you. Even being a makeup artist you have to first invest a lot from your end. You need to create your own portfolio and buy products on your own to get clients but once people know you, it will get easy for you to get clients.
Her favorite makeup trend currently is the use of graphic liners in different innovative ways usually with pastel and neon colors. Barbie loves experimenting with that, as it looks glam but at the same time also very subtle. She is very much inspired by Shreya Jain and would love to work with her sometime in the future. Also, Madhusmita inspires and motivates her a lot, she feels very blessed to know a person like her who supports her so much and is an extremely genuine person.
When COVID was at its peak she tried her level best to provide sources to people to reach out for help. In the future, she wants to work for orphan kids and help them get a better life. She also wants to stand for all the women who are suffering due to this patriarchal society.
Being a makeup artist has helped me a lot, I get to explore myself every day. I feel at peace whenever I am working on a particular look. Because when I work I do not feel like working as I totally enjoy doing it. Through this industry I alsi got to meet so many amazing people on the internet. They always support and motivate me. I do not find those kind of people in general in my surrounding.
