Transgender model Anjali Lama has been breaking norms one at a time, in the fashion industry. She is the first transgender model from Nepal to work with an international brand campaign.
Born in the Nabin Waima in the Nuwakot district of Nepal, she did not identify with her ascribed gender from quite an early age. Then, after moving to Kathmandu, she discovered the trans community and explored her new identity after changing it. However, her father and family still do not accept her and she is still unable to rent a house for herself as she says. Lama’s breakthrough came when she was featured in Voice of Women, a Nepalese magazine in 2009. In 2017, she auditioned for Lakme Fashion Week but didn’t get through. Although, she kept trying and got selected in her third attempt to the team of models. Since then, the model has walked for famous designers like Gaurav Gupta, Raw Mango, and Rajesh Pratap Singh. She has also worked with magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Femina, and Grazia.
Anjali Lama has also won the GQ award for Agent of Change as well as Vogue’s Model of the Year award for 2019. Not to mention, Model of the Year award 2019 by Grazia. The model has also worked on a campaign with Levi’s. Anjali’s fierceness and passion have been a push for the community and herself, setting standards every day.
