Bengali model and actress, Rituparna Sengupta, has organised a relief camp for sex workers in Kalighat red-light area. She also had the support of choreographer Avirup Sengupta’s NGO, Prayas.
On June 6, the team gave out sanitary napkins, groceries, and other daily necessities to women. They also distributed milk, bread, and biscuits to around 40 kids in the area. The actress is currently in Singapore with her family and in spite of that, she extends help to the poor and powerless. Fashion designer Papri Jain, Ballygunge Siksha Sadan principal Sunita Sen and social volunteers like Madhumita Ghosh and Arnab Dutta supported this initiative . A 35-year-old sex worker said talking to TOI, “I am thankful to all for providing us with the essential items. I have almost exhausted my savings and was worried about the upcoming days”.
The actress said that she has previous work experience with these women in films where she played a sex worker. For example, she played the role of Begum Jaan in the film Rajkahini. She is also an active social worker who has done plenty of work for such people in the past. Hence, she understands their struggles.
