It is Pride Month and over the past years, Bollywood has seen many actors and models own their gender identity. One such model is Navya Singh, a transgender woman making her own way in the industry. She has done shoots for Grazia and Cosmopolitan magazines.
When she spoke about her family and early career days:
In an interview with Lehren, she revealed the struggles she has faced because of being a part of the LGBT community, both professionally and personally. She said that being born in a Punjabi family in Bihar, it was not easy initially, especially being a woman. Additionally, she said that her father was dominating. However, her parents eventually accepted her sexuality and she feels extremely blessed. Speaking about her career, she said, “I came to Mumbai in 2009 and started doing events and modeling assignments. After joining the LGBT community, I realized that our society discriminates against those who are a part of it. They have been rejected instead of being supported. Therefore, I thought this is the right time to work towards the community and myself.”.
On facing rejection:
Navya also elaborated on how she has faced a great deal of rejection in auditions due to her identity. “Whenever I went to audition, people rejected me saying that the role is ‘only for females’. I do not understand the term ‘only for females’. When I went for a job, they rejected me after seeing my certificate. So, I face rejections all the time, especially in the glamour industry. The entertainment industry is stereotypical towards transgenders, no matter how liberal it claims to be.”, the model said.
Navya responded by saying that she experiences it every day when asked about receiving hurtful comments from people. However, she feels that she is blessed to be able to think and feel like a human. She also says that she feels lucky that she has lived two lives in one lifetime.
