Bengali director Indranil Banerjee has been appreciated for his 4 Shades of Leap which has been claimed as India’s first horror mini-series. He is also the founder and CEO of Unity Pictures. The director takes inspiration from filmmakers such as Satyajit Ray, Steven Spielberg, and Francis Ford Coppola. He has also made films like The Chase, The Mirage, and The 3rd Eye.
His journey of filmmaking
Talking to t2 about himself, he described himself as an independent filmmaker. He has won more than 70 awards and more than 130 selections worldwide for his short films. After completing his course at New York Film Academy, he now works as a commercial ad film director. When asked about 4 Shades of Leap, he said, “I hit upon this idea at the end of 2019. My cinematographer and I were having coffee on my terrace and discussing Netflix’s Ghost Stories, which I honestly did not like. We planned to do our own research on some actual events in Calcutta and make a film.”. The director also said that his favorite genres are thrillers and comedies. But since Bengalis like horror movies, he decided to take up horror as a challenge. He also described the various cinematic elements he used in its making.

The director also spoke about his team’s research. “We talked with individuals, visited abandoned houses, and began forming the script. The production design is a vital component. In horror, it’s a necessary tool in creating dread and atmosphere, as is the sound design. But we kept a normal atmosphere and let the fear get triggered suddenly by primal feelings in an intuitive way.”, said Indranil talking about direction. He said he wanted to prove that a Bengali can direct a horror anthology without good equipment or celebrities on a reasonable budget. The director said he is overwhelmed by the feedback from all over the world and is thankful to his friends and film critics.
Indranil Banerjee has also composed music for the movie One Night Stand which won him nine awards. He is currently working on a short film Urminala which will be submitted at global festivals and streamed on OTT platforms. He says he will also do some ad films as well.
