Mona Varonica is a model, travel influencer, and activist for transgender rights. She was the first plus-size transgender model in India. She breaks many stereotypes with her title alone. Her journey is not at all usual and inspires many people from the trans community who are fighting for acceptance. She was born and brought up in a South Indian family. Mona identified herself as a female at a very young age even though she was born with a male body. She grew up with a supportive elder sister and mother. Mona wanted to pursue fashion studies and her decision did not go well with her father. However, she went ahead with her Hormone Replacement Therapy. Later, she went on to do graduation in fashion studies with the support of her mother and sister.
Mona’s father gradually started to support her and later she underwent sex reassignment surgery in Canada. After the surgery, she felt more confident and began her new journey. Later, she got training from a professional makeup artist and worked with many reputed international brands. She has also walked in Lakme Fashion Week.
Mona admires Naomi Campbell the most therefore she took her last name Campbell. Today she is a successful model internationally but struggles to find work in India. Mona believes that “Beauty shouldn’t be categorized as trans, cis, gay, bi or straight. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, it’s about equality.” She feels that no one should wait for the opportunities rather create their own and believe in working hard and grabbing all opportunities which come in the way. Moreover, Mona is a also dual Ph.D. holder in Aeronautics from Stanford University. And, works as a Senior Intern Aerospace aircraft designer at NASA.
