We celebrate June as Pride month globally. This month is that time of the year where people celebrate the lives of the LGBTQ+ community. The Supreme court decriminalized section 377 on September 6, 2018. India has already come a long way but there are some people of the society who do not give the community the respect they deserve. However, our Indian film industry has tried its level best to create awareness among people. While there are also movies that have misrepresented the community. On other hand, some have shown justice to homosexuality.
Here are a few movies and shows you should watch in this pride month.
Margarita with a straw:
The movie not only deals with homosexuality but also disabilities like blindness and cerebral palsy, starring Kalki Koechlin and Sayani Gupta. It is a story of a rebellious woman with cerebral palsy who leaves India to study in New York. On her journey of self-discovery, she unexpectedly falls in love. This is one of the underrated movies in Bollywood that represented the community beautifully.
A Tamil series on Zee5 starring Amrutha Srinivasan as a protagonist, Kallachirippu is a murder mystery. It also deals with homosexuality. The message of the story was about society not accepting homosexuals. This is the first Tamil series that dealing with homosexuality.
Made in heaven:
The Amazon original series starring Arjun Mathur and Shobhitha Dhulipala focussed on different kinds of marriage and problems they had. Although the series released in 2019, it was set before section 377 was decriminalized. This series will make you wonder about struggles the community must have faced before September 6, 2018.
Ek Ladki ko Dekha toh Aisa Laga:
This movie was the first movie that dealt with homosexuality after section 377 was decriminalized. Also, the movie starred Sonam Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, and Regina Cassandra. Moreover, in the movie, Sweety makes her family accept homosexuality and normalize it forms the crux of the story.
