In India, it’s a stigma if you support the LGBTQ+ community. And, the prejudices regarding gender fluidity have been there ever since. However, as a silver lining to the bigger issue, there are some people who have been devoting their lives and are creating awareness among the people about the community. The mainstream media usually does not cover the efforts of people who work for the community. Here is the list of people who are working as role models for every LGBTQ+ youth in India.
Growing up Gopi faced a lot of harassment being an intersex person. There was in his life where he had to discontinue his studies. However, he decided to fight back, and in 2011 started Srishti Madurai. It’s a group that works for the welfare of gender and sexual minorities. Since then he has been leading a lot of LGBTQ+ initiatives in Tamil Nadu. Gopi was given the Diversity Leadership Award earlier this year by the World HRD Congress. He also wrote a book titled“Maraikappata Pakkangal”.
Fida Khan is the lead singer in 6 pack band which is India’s first all transgender musical brand. She also works in Humsafar Trust as a counselor. She also had a troublesome childhood but despite that, she has managed to beat all the norms of society and become an inspiration for everyone.
Manvendra Singh Govil:
He belonged to a conservative royal family who disowned him for being gay. However, it did not stop him from being true to himself. He started raising awareness on gay rights a decade ago. He has set up Lakshya Foundation which works with the gay and transgender community to promote safe sex.
Sonal is an actress and is vocal about the LGBTQ+ community. She is the co-founder of Yaariyan and Umaang which is India’s largest youth initiative. Therefore these initiatives work for lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people in the country. Sonal has also been a part of many movies that represented the Indian LGBTQ+ community globally.
